Harris speaks about creating economic opportunity for Latino men; Trump airs familiar grievances

MIAMI (AP) — Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris says she would work to bring more funds to community banks to help Latino men secure small business loans, while Republican Donald Trump’s economic roundtable aimed at Latino voters devolved Tuesday into a tirade of insults against his opponent. In response to Trump’s claims that she was a socialist, Harris said: “I’m a capitalist. I’m a pragmatic capitalist.” Trump, meanwhile, described Harris as “lazy,” railed against green energy and talked about “extreme” presidential power during remarks at his golf club in Doral, a Miami suburb.

More Republicans are voting early, helping break records. Nearly 19 million ballots cast so far

With Donald Trump's encouragement, Republicans are joining Democrats at the polls to cast their ballots early this year. The surge of GOP voters has helped break records for early voting in certain swing states such as Georgia and Nevada. Nearly 19 million early votes had been cast as of Tuesday. Campaigns typically try to get their voters to cast ballots early, either in person or by mail, so they can focus on turning out marginal voters on Election Day. But when Trump condemned early voting in 2020 and 2022, many Republicans stopped doing it. It's unclear what the early turnout means for the presidential election because it only factors in a voter's registration, not their actual vote.

Harris says she's ready if Trump tries to prematurely declare victory, isn't worried about sexism

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kamala Harris says her team is prepared to challenge Donald Trump if he tries to prematurely declare victory in the 2024 election — but first she’s focused beating the Republican nominee. Harris spoke to NBC News Tuesday, just two weeks before Election Day. She said the Democrats “have the resources and the expertise” should Trump try to subvert the election. Trump has been criminally charged with trying to overturn the 2020 election, and refuses to admit he lost to President Joe Biden. After a failed legal effort to overturn the results, a mob of Trump supporters rioted at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, attacking law enforcement in an effort to stop the certification of the race.

Israel says it killed a Hezbollah official expected to become the group's next leader

BEIRUT (AP) — The Israeli military says one of its airstrikes in early October killed a top Hezbollah official who had been widely expected to become the group’s next leader. Earlier on Tuesday the Israeli military leveled a building in a suburb of Beirut that it said housed Hezbollah “facilities,” sending smoke and debris into the air a few hundred meters from where a spokesperson for the militant group had just briefed journalists about a weekend drone attack that damaged the Israeli prime minister’s house. Also on Tuesday U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Blinken aims to revive cease-fire efforts after last week's killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

Deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounders sickens 49 people in 10 states

Federal officials say E. coli food poisoning linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers has sickened at least 49 people in 10 states. That includes one person who died and 10 who were hospitalized. It also includes a child hospitalized with severe kidney complications. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the outbreak on Tuesday. It says infections were reported between Sept. 27 and Oct. 11. The CDC says everyone interviewed in connection with the outbreak had reported eating at McDonald’s before falling ill and most mentioned eating Quarter Pounder hamburgers. The specific ingredient tied to the outbreak has not been identified, but investigators are focused on onions and beef.

North Carolina county surrounding Asheville overcounted Helene deaths by as many as 30, sheriff says

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A sheriff’s office statement and data from the state show that the North Carolina county that is home to Asheville overcounted deaths caused by Helene by as many as 30. The information in the statement on Tuesday significantly reduces the death toll from the historic storm. Buncombe County officials had previously reported 72 deaths and are now deferring to a state tally of 42 deaths for the county. The county’s number dates back to an Oct. 3 news release and briefing by Sheriff Quentin Miller. But state officials, relying on reviews by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh, have consistently reported a number lower than that for the county.

Former Abercrombie & Fitch chief Mike Jeffries arrested on federal sex trafficking charges

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries, his romantic partner and a third man have been arrested on sex trafficking and interstate prostitution charges. An indictment filed in a New York federal court accuses them of luring men into drug-laced, outlandish and coercive sex parties by dangling the promise of modeling for the retailer’s ads. Jeffries and his attorney didn't comment as the ex-CEO left a federal courthouse in Florida after being released on a $10 million bond. His partner, Matthew Smith, was being held without bond. His lawyers say they'll respond to the allegations in court. Co-defendant James Jacobson told a federal court in Minnesota that he understands the allegations. He's free on $500,000 bond.

How a nearly extinct crocodile species returned from the brink in Cambodia

PHNOM TAMAO, Cambodia (AP) — The hatching of clutches of critically endangered Siamese crocodiles in Cambodia is an unlikely comeback, aided by an even unlikelier ally. Crocodile farmers who had nearly hunted the species to extinction in the first place now play a vital role in providing purebred reptiles for captive breeding. The thirst for crocodile skins for bags and other accessories had decimated populations to the extent that scientists thought they were extinct. A last enclave of the species was found in Cambodia's remote Cardamom Mountains and a captive breeding program was begun to restore the species to its wild habitat, forests that play an important role in absorbing carbon emissions.

LeBron and Bronny James make history as the NBA's first father-son duo to play together

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James and Bronny James became the first father and son to play in the NBA together when they checked into the game together in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener. LeBron James is the 39-year-old top scorer in NBA history, while his 20-year-old namesake son was a second-round pick by the Lakers last summer. They are the first father and son to play in the world’s top basketball league at the same time, let alone on the same team. Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. were in attendance at the Lakers’ downtown arena to witness the same history they made in baseball.

Rudy Giuliani ordered to turn over NYC apartment, 26 watches to Georgia election workers

A federal judge has ordered Rudy Giuliani to turn over his New York City apartment and various other assets to two Georgia election workers who won a $148 million defamation judgment against him. Judge Lewis Liman in Manhattan issued the ruling Tuesday. The former New York City mayor must hand over his Manhattan apartment, more than two dozen watches, sports memorabilia and a 1980 Mercedes to Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea “Shaye” Moss. They won a lawsuit over Giuliani's false ballot fraud claims against them during the 2020 presidential election. Giuliani's lawyers say they're confident he will win his appeal of the defamation verdict and get his property back.
