About the Employer
Established in 1957, College of the Siskiyous is one of 113 publicly funded California community colleges. Classes began September 10, 1959 with 67 students and only three campus buildings. Since that humble beginning, College of the Siskiyous (COS) has greatly expanded its programs, services, and facilities. COS is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The Fire/Emergency Response Technology Program is approved as an accredited regional academy for the State Fire Marshal's Office. The Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Vocational Nursing and Registered Nursing Programs are accredited by their respective state agencies.COS is located at the base of majestic Mount Shasta (elevation 14,162 feet) in far northern California. Its 250-acre primary campus is centered in the historic lumber town of Weed, named after its founder Abner Weed, and is easily accessible from Interstate 5 and Highway 97. The primary campus offers numerous associate degree and certificate programs in the arts, athletics, humanities, sciences, mathematics as well as career and technical programs in business/computer science, EMS-Paramedic, Fire, and Welding, to name but a few. Students have access to academic counseling, academic assessment, library services and resources, career counseling, personal counseling, financial aid assistance, Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS), Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), Student Support Services (SSS), textbook sales and buy backs, and tutoring services. COS is also one of only eleven community colleges in California to offer students on-campus student housing.In addition to its primary campus, COS operates a smaller campus in Yreka, 30 miles north of Weed, which is the site of the Rural Health Sciences Institute (RHSI) and the Technology Training Center. In Yreka, a variety of transfer, general education, vocational, continuing education, distance education, and lifelong learning classes are available. Under the direction of an administrator or manager, provides academic advising and related services to students, including orientation, registration assistance, and monitoring progress; develops intervention strategies to enhance student retention and academic success; coordinates the daily operations of specific programs or initiatives; performs outreach activities at multiple school sites, in the community, and at assigned college campuses.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
ESSENTIALRESPONSIBILITIES

- Provides academic advising and related services to students, including orientation, registration assistance, and monitoring progress; develops intervention strategies to enhance student retention and academic success. *
- Assists students with transcript and prerequisite evaluations, registration, transfer and career goals, orientation, course scheduling, education plans, distance advising, basic financial aid questions, graduation petitions, general education certification, and other academic advising processes; provides assistance to students with articulation and curriculum. *
- Coordinates the recruitment and assessment of students to determine appropriate placement and needs for academic/program support; assists with analysis of individual student needs and situations to determine eligibility for various program grants and campus services; refers students to campus services and services off campus including tutors or counselors as needed. *
- Provides academic and career advice to prospective and current students in one-on-one and/or small group advising sessions; monitors and tracks student progress. *
- Serves as an advisor for programs as assigned; represents College of Siskiyous (COS) at related events; promotes programs at COS events, local high schools, and college/career fairs as assigned. *
- Coordinates with other departments on campus to ensure that effective services are provided to students; communicates with students, staff, parents, other departments, outside agencies, and schools to exchange information, resolves issues and coordinate activities. *
- Prepares and conducts orientation sessions and student workshops as assigned; performs outreach activities at multiple sites. *
- Develops and monitors support programs and activities designed to facilitate the achievement of students’ educational goals, including orientation, tutorial services, and other support services. *
- Plans, organizes, and performs a variety of administrative and technical duties in support of the day-to-day operations and services to students.*
- Processes graduation petitions and assists with transcript evaluations; assist with Degree Audit functionality. *
- Develops and maintains a variety of files and computerized databases; inputs student data; prepares reports, flyers, correspondence, and other informational materials. *
- Answers telephone calls, technical questions and e-mails from staff, faculty, students, and/or parents/guardians. *
- Assists in the onboarding and training of staff. *
- Attends participatory governance, advisory, and department committee meetings as appropriate; participates in the accreditation process. *
- Participates in the college recruitment and selection process.
- Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field;AND
- Two (2) years of experience working with students in an educational setting;
OR - Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- May be required to possess or demonstrate an ability to obtain a valid driver’s license, if driving is required as an essential responsibility of the position.
- May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, and/or events in support of the overall objective of the position.
- Occasional travel is expected for this position.
