Is this a spam number? ›

One way to check if a number is potentially a scam is to use a reverse phone number lookup service. These websites and apps allow you to enter a number and see public information associated with it, such as the registered name, location, and carrier.

Spam Calls

Upon further investigation by CharityWatch, it appears that such calls are not legitimate fundraising calls from the FEED Foundation, but are rather the result of a potential scam. FEED Foundation “Spam” Calls.

Optimum never makes unsolicited phone calls to our customers. If you get a call from someone who claims to be tech support, hang up and call immediately contact us.

Other Scams to Avoid. Scammers posing as Spectrum are targeting customers with service discounts for a fee. They're using all lines of communication, from text messages to phone calls and emails, offering to reduce your service costs (for example, 40% off your bill for two years for a fee).

You could get your phone number spoofed

Because a scammer knows your phone number is legitimate after you've called a spam number back, they could spoof your phone number. Spoofing attacks over the phone trick people into thinking they are answering a familiar number.

In making such a request, make sure to use the words “place me on your do not call list” and note the date, time, name of charity, and name of the telemarketing firm. If they call again on behalf of that charity, you can file a complaint with the FTC at www.ftc.gov.

You can access your voicemail by calling *86 from your device or your 10-digit mobile number from another device. In this case, press * immediately to interrupt the greeting and enter your password, then tap #. The default voicemail password is the last 4-digits of your phone number.

Simply entering the phone number into your preferred search engine can often tell you if it's a scammer. Otherwise, you can search the number across specific sites where people talk about scams.

Dialing *69 is a simple way to find out an unknown caller's number for free from your iPhone, Android, or landline.

With any spam text messages, you should never reply to them. Doing so confirms to the spammers that you're a real person and a potential target. Sometimes spammers try to trick you into responding by saying, "text STOP to be removed from our mailing list" or something similar. Don't be fooled by this.

If you get calls from people saying your number is showing up on their caller ID, it's likely that your number has been spoofed. We suggest first that you do not answer any calls from unknown numbers, but if you do, explain that your telephone number is being spoofed and that you did not actually make any calls.
